Here we present summaries of annual reports on the activities of the Council of Scientific Societies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Full versions of the reports have been published on the Polish version of the website.

2021

  • In 2021, there were 3 plenary meetings of the Council (April 20, 2021, December 10, 2021 and September 17, 2021), 2 meetings of the Council Presidium (May 8, 2021 and November 9, 2021) and 1 working meeting of the Presidium (October 13, 2021).
  • On April 14, 2021, the Council supported the position on the creation of the National Copernican Program, prepared by the Department I of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
  • On May 27, 2021 and December 10, 2021, the online conference "Communication in science. Communication of knowledge. The Role of Scientific Societies” took place. The conferece was organized jointly with the Polish Society for Social Communication and the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
  • On September 17, 2021, the conference "Social scientific movement in the process of change" was held, organized jointly with the Płock Scientific Society, as part of the celebration of its 200th anniversary.

2020

  • In 2020, there were 2 plenary meetings of the Council (March 5, 2020 and December 3, 2020) and 3 meetings of the Council Presidium (February 4, 2020, June 17, 2020 and September 17, 2020).
  • The coronavirus epidemic from mid-March 2020 and the restrictions introduced by the government, practically prevented the holding of the plenary meetings of the Council and the organization of the planned activities and events.
  • During the plenary meeting of the Council on 5 March 2020, supplementary elections were held for a member of the Council and members of the Council Presidium.
    Two publications were published: (1) "The role of scientific societies in the development of national, civic and cultural awareness" – the book summarizes the 2nd Congress of
  • Scientific Societies (Poznań, September 14-15, 2018); (2) "The future of scientific societies in the light of the provisions of the Law on Higher Education and Science" – the publication contains speeches and conclusions from the conference, which took place in Warsaw on November 28, 2019.
  • The members of the council paid their last respects to: prof. Jan Strelau, chairman of the Council of Scientific Societies in the term of office 2003-2006, and prof. dr hab. Julian Ławrynowicz, member of the council in 1984-2014.

2019

  • In 2019, there were 3 plenary meetings of the Council (March 7, 2019; June 17, 2019 and October 29, 2019) and the third meeting of the Council Bureau (January 31, 2019, April 25, 2019 and September 27, 2019).
  • On November 28, 2019, the conference "The future of scientific societies in the light of the provisions of the Law on Higher Education and Science" was held in Warsaw. A total of 76 people attended the conference, including 23 members of the Council of Scientific Societies, the President of the Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations NOT and 52 representatives of scientific societies and associations. The conference was aimed at discussing the social situation of the scientific movement in Poland, resulting from the adoption of the Law on Higher Education and Science and the legal acts issued on its basis. During the conference, 3 introductory papers and 4 panels covering groups of societies (Panel 1 - general and regional societies and societies in social sciences and humanities, Panel 2 - societies in biological and agricultural sciences, Panel 3 - societies in exact and technical sciences and scientific and technical associations NOT, Panel 4 - societies in medical sciences) were delivered.

2018

  • In 2018, two plenary meetings of the Council (April 12, 2018 and November 26, 2018) and one meeting of the Council Presidium (February 18, 2018) were held.
  • On September 14-15, 2018, the 2nd Congress of Scientific Societies "The Role of Scientific Societies in the Development of Civic and Cultural Awareness" was held in Poznań. It was organized by the Council of Scientific Societies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences, the Polish Academy of Learning and the Płock Scientific Society. The aim of the Congress was to present the contribution of the social scientific movement to the development of national, civic and cultural awareness in the period since Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, and to evaluate this contribution, as well as to discuss the current place of the social scientific movement in the science system in Poland. 37 papers were presented during the Congress.

2017

  • In the reporting period, 2 plenary meetings of the Council (September 9, 2017 and November 9, 2017) and 1 meeting of the Presidium of the Council (May 11, 2017) were held.
  • In 2017, the council devoted itself to the implementation of the following activities:
    (1) Continuation of activities related to the development of legal solutions regarding the status of scientific and scientific-technical societies and associations and the system of financing the social scientific movement in Poland;
    (2) Continuation of work on the preparation of an expert opinion on the wealth of the libraries of regional scientific societies;
    (3) Publication of the book "The cultural role of journals of scientific societies in Poland";
    (4) Undertaking activities related to the organization of the 2nd Congress of Scientific Societies "The role of scientific societies in the dissemination of science and knowledge and in the development of national, civic and cultural awareness";
    (5) Organizing, together with the Poznań Society of Science's Friends, a conference on "Activities of scientific societies in the region, their cooperation with local governments, branches of the Polish Academy of Sciences and PAU and local branches of FSNT-NOT";
    and others.

2016

  • In the reporting period, 1 plenary meeting of the Council (June 16, 2016) and 2 meetings of the Presidium of the Council (April 6, 2016, December 7, 2016) were held.
  • In 2016, the council devoted itself to the implementation of the following activities:
    (1) Organizing, together with the Scientific Society of Płock, a conference on "Journals of scientific societies in Poland" - Płock, September 16-17, 2016;
    (2) Work was undertaken on the preparation of an expert opinion on the wealth of the libraries of regional scientific societies;
    (3) Preparation of applications for co-financing publications on the social scientific movement;
    and others.

2015

  • In the reporting period, 2 plenary meetings of the Council (March 26, 2015 and November 19, 2015) and 1 meeting of the Presidium of the Council (Febuary 2, 2015) were held.
  • In 2015, the council devoted itself to the implementation of the following activities:
    (1) Resolution No. 2/2015 of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences of 20 January 2015 defined the main tasks of the Council of Scientific Societies;
    (2) Organizing, together with the Scientific Society of Płock, a conference on "Perspectives of regional scientific societies in Poland" - Płock, June 12-13, 2015;
    (3) Presentation of the paper "The importance of regional scientific societies for Polish science" (authors: Z. Kruszewski, T. Majsterkiewicz) at the conference "Genealogies of famous families from Mazovia and Podlasie";
    (4) Preparation of opinions on publications of scientific societies for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education;
    and others.

2014

  • In the reporting period, 2 plenary meetings of the Council (June 6, 2014 and November 20, 2014) and 1 meeting of the Presidium of the Council (June 16, 2014) were held.
  • In 2014, the council devoted itself to the implementation of the following activities:
    (1) Preparation of an expert opinion on the social condition of the scientific movement and its participation in the general scientific and educational policy of the state. The expert opinion "Social scientific movement in Poland - history and future" contains 73 pages of typescript (the main part), including 14 charts and 20 tables. It includes 6 chapters: 1. Introduction, 2. Historical outline of the social scientific movement, 3. Criteria for the evaluation of scientific societies (Ranking of scientific societies), 4. Status of scientific societies, 5. Summary, 6. Conclusions and a list of literature and 14 appendices;
    (2) Adoption of a resolution which define the criteria for recognizing the society as scientific;
    and others.

2013

  • In the reporting period, 3 plenary meetings of the Council (March 14, 2013, June 13, 2013 and December 5, 2013) and 3 meetings of the Presidium of the Council (Febuary 14, 2013, May 16, 2013 and December 5, 2013) were held.
  • On September 17-18, 2013, the 1st Congress of Scientific Societies "Scientific Societies in Poland - Heritage, Culture, Science, Duration" was held in Warsaw. During the Congress, 67 papers were delivered in 4 plenary sessions and 2 problem sessions, including 15 papers at plenary sessions and 52 papers and messages at problem sessions.
  • In 2013, the council devoted itself to the implementation of the following activities:
    (1) The monograph "Scientific societies in Poland - heritage, culture, science, duration", containing 63 scientific studies, was published;
    (2) Continuation of work on the expert opinion "The state of the social scientific movement in Poland", performed by the Council team: prof. dr hab. Stanisław Kunikowski, prof. dr hab. Zbigniew Kruszewski, prof. dr hab. Marek Kowalczyk, prof. dr hab. Jerzy Majkowski, dr Andrzej Kansy, mgr inż. Tadeusz Majsterkiewicz;
    and others.

2012

  • In the reporting period, 2 plenary meetings of the Council were organized - on April 26 and November 15, 2012, and 3 meetings of the Council Presidium on March 29, June 14 and September 12, 2012.
  • Development of the initial organizational assumptions and the project of the program "Congress of Scientific Societies - The role of scientific societies in the dissemination of science and the development of national, civic and cultural awareness and shaping the knowledge society" (September 17-18, 2013, Warsaw).
  • As the Council continued activities related to the adoption of the Act on Scientific Societies, representatives of the Council met with deputies and senators or participated in meetings of Sejm and Senate committees.
  • The publication by Dr. A. Kansa "On the margin of freedom - Notes Płockie (1956-2011) - history and politics" has been published, published as a position of the Council of Scientific Societies.

2011

  • In the reporting period, there were 3 plenary meetings of the Council (on April 14, July 5 and December 8, 2011) and 4 meetings of the Council Presidium (on February 23, April 14, May 12 and October 26, 2011).
  • At the first plenary meeting on 5 July 2011, the Council elected the members of the Presidium and discussed the program assumptions for the 2011-2014 term of office.
  • Actions were taken to organize the Congress of Scientific Societies in 2013.

2010

  • During the reporting period, no plenary meeting of the Council was organized, 2 meetings of the Presidium of the Council were held - on May 10 and October 26, 2010.
  • At the meeting of the Presidium of the Council, held on May 10, 2010, it was decided to continue activities aimed at obtaining the adoption by the Sejm of the draft act on scientific societies prepared in 2008, which would allow for legal, statutory regulation of financing of scientific societies and their role in the Polish science system.
  • Work was started on the preparation of a short study on scientific societies in the Czech Republic.

2009

  • In the reporting year, no plenary meetings of the Council were organized, 4 meetings of the Presidium of the Council were held - on February 25, June 17, September 22 and December 11, 2009, including 2 open meetings, on June 17 and December 11, 2009.
  • Continuation of activities aimed at leading to the adoption of the Act on Scientific Societies - the organization of meetings with the management of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Polish Academy of Sciences to support this Act, and to develop and present to state authorities and parliamentary committees proposals on the terms of operation and financing social science movement.
  • Representatives of the Council took part in solemn scientific sessions on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Polish Biochemical Society and the 100th anniversary of the Society of Friends of Sciences in Przemyśl.

2008

  • In the reporting period, the Council held 2 plenary meetings - on January 28 and May 29, 2008 and 3 meetings of the Council Presidium on March 6, November 17 and December 12, 2008.
  • In implementing the adopted action program, the Council, together with the Scientific Society of Płock and the Paweł Włodkowic University College in Płock, organized on 30 May 2008 in Płock a conference on "The role and principles of functioning of scientific societies in the knowledge society". 42 participants took part in this event.
  • Considering the huge diversity of the situation of scientific societies, an attempt was made to collect data on the condition and current situation of scientific societies, including information on members, scope and forms of activity, sources of income and data on the costs of conducting individual activities.

2007

  • It was decided to apply to the new management of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the creation of the Council for the next term of office, arguing this with the need to continue the work undertaken on the Act on Scientific Societies and to create a representation of societies that could, together with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, define the role of societies in the development of science and develop financing of societies.
  • Conducting elections to the Council for the 2007-2010 term.
  • The Presidium of the Council adopted the draft framework work program of the Council of Scientific Societies for the term 2007-2010 and the work plan for 2008.

2003-2006

  • In the years 2003-2006:
    • In 2003, 1 plenary meeting of the Council was held on October 8, 2003 and 2 meetings of the Presidium of the Council on January 28 and November 5, 2003.
    • In 2004, 2 plenary meetings of the Council were held: on March 4, 2004 and on September 22, 2004, and 3 meetings of the Presidium of the Council - on January 7, May 19, and June 25, 2004, and on February 18, 2004, a joint meeting of the Presidium of the Council of Scientific Societies and the Presidium of the Council for the Promotion of Science.
    • In 2005, 1 plenary meeting of the Council was held on December 1-2, 2005 in Poznań and the 3 meetings of the Council Presidium on January 19, June 2 and September 21, 2005. There was also a meeting of the Council Presidium with the Board of the Płock Scientific Society on June 2, 2005, meeting of the Presidium of the Council with the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Information Technology, prof. dr hab. J. Langer on June 28, 2005 and a meeting of the appointed Team of representatives of the Council and the Ministry of Science and Information Technology on July 13, 2005.
    • In 2006, 2 plenary meetings were held and 4 meetings of the Council Presidium on January 23, March 6, May 25 and November 6, 2006.
  • The Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, by resolution No. 2/2003 of January 21, 2003, established that 40 people may be appointed to the Council of Scientific Societies for the term of office in the years 2003-2006, including 26 people elected by scientific societies and 14 delegates.
  • In the discussion on the assumptions of the Council's program of activities in the term of office 2003–2006, among others, it was pointed out that the law on science being prepared and the current situation of the social scientific movement in Poland necessitate a different look at the Council's program of activities in the current term of office. It was proposed to prioritize the preparation of studies related to the situation of the social scientific movement in Poland and proposals for formal and legal solutions regarding the system of financing and supporting the activities of scientific societies.
